Our clients typically seek patent protection in multiple major markets, including the EU, the US, Japan, China, South Korea, and Brazil. The Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) provides access to patent application procedures in almost all countries worldwide. While a PCT application does not create a “world patent,” it saves applicants seeking transnational patent protection time and money. Depending on the applicant’s nationality, PCT applications can be filed with the Swedish Patent Office (PRV), the European Patent Office (EPO), or other patent offices. PCT applications are typically filed after the initial application to a national or regional patent office. International PCT applications can enter the regional or national phase within 30 months of the initial application.

KIPA is responsible for managing PCT applications filed with the European Patent Office (EPO) and their subsequent examination procedures, as well as regional applications filed with the EPO.
